Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, was a music genre developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans in the 1970s. Hip-hop is extremely popular in America. However, as a niche music style in China, there is no good platform for hip hop music to show and win over an audience’s attention. In China, rappers are discriminated against, and people generally think that rap represents bad language and violence. Many people in China think that rappers can only be underground singers. In fact, China also has a group of excellent rappers who combine traditional Chinese culture with hip-hop culture. So, I designed this series of posters, combining the Chinese elements appearing in their songs with their photos, to tell everyone that China also has amazing hip-hop singers.

嘻哈音乐(也称为嘻哈或说唱音乐)是1970年代市中心的非洲裔美国人在美国开发的一种音乐流派。嘻哈音乐在美国非常受欢迎。但是,作为中国的一种小众音乐风格,没有一个好的平台可以使嘻哈音乐表现出来并赢得观众的关注。在中国,说唱歌手受到歧视,人们普遍认为说唱歌手代表不良的语言和暴力。中国许多人认为说唱歌手只能是地下歌手。实际上,中国也有一群优秀的说唱歌手,他们将中国传统文化与嘻哈文化相结合。因此,我设计了这一系列海报,将他们歌曲中出现的中国元素与照片结合在一起,告诉大家中国也有出色的嘻哈歌手。

As the first female Rapper in China, the arrangement of Vava’s song named “New Clothes” adopts the classic Beijing Opera section named “Water Pedlar”. Been given some elements of fashion, clarity, and hip-hop rhythm, and coupled with Vava’s great ability to write words and rhythmic arrangement, this RAP combines tradition and fashion to the extreme. Speaking of Beijing Opera, what comes to mind must be Chinese culture. As an external carrier of music style and emotional communication, if hip-hop wants to become the mainstream music in China, it needs to rely on a catalyst that can quickly make people understand without losing its unique characteristics. As for this catalyst, Vava chose Beijing Opera. The traditional style of music is inherited in a trendy style, and the latest music is conveyed in the most traditional form. I choose Beijing Opera Facial Masks as the background and the lyrics of Vava are made into her hair in this collage, which deeply embodies the combination of Beijing Opera and Hip-hop.

在这张拼贴画中,背景部分我选择了京剧脸谱纹样,将vava的歌词部分做成了她的头发。体现了京剧文化和嘻哈文化的结合。VAVA被称为中国第一女Rapper。Vava有一首歌叫我的新衣,编曲采样了经典京剧选段“卖水”,并且赋予了时尚,明晰,嘻哈的节奏,配上VAVA超强的作词及节奏编排能力,使得这首RAP将传统与潮流的糅合达到了极致。说起京剧必然想到的是中国文化,hiphop作为一种外来的音乐风格和感情传达的载体,它在中国想要成为主流,需要依赖一种快速让人们了解,且又不丧失自己独有特点的催化剂,这个催化剂,VAVA选择了京剧。用新潮的风格传承了最传统的音乐形式,用最传统的形式向大家传递了最新潮的音乐。

In Bridge’s hometown,Chongqing, fast mask-changing is a very famous art. One of the special effects of Sichuan Opera is to reveal the changes in the heart and thoughts and feelings of the characters in the play, that is, to turn the invisible and insensible abstract emotions and mental states into visible and sensible concrete images. Sichuan Opera changed face is a stunt used to shape characters in Sichuan Opera art. It is a romantic approach that reveals the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters in the play. Therefore, in the background part of this college, I used the elements of Chinese mask-changing art. Dialect rap is a popular form of Chinese rap in recent years, and Bridge is one of the representatives of Chinese dialect rap. His creation will not pay special attention to the distinction between Putonghua and dialects, but more of the pursuit of comfortable listening. And this natural mixture brings a lot of surprise to the whole tune. I turn Chongqing dialect into the hair part of Bridge in this collage.  .

川剧变脸是川剧表演的特技之一,用于揭示剧中人物的内心及思想感情的变化,即把不可见、不可感的抽象的情绪和心理状态变成可见、可感的具体形象——脸谱。川剧变脸是运用在川剧艺术中塑造人物的一种特技。是揭示剧中人物内心思想感情的一种浪漫主义手法。在这张拼贴画中,Bridge的头发部分,我运用了重庆方言。在Bridge的家乡重庆,变脸艺术很有名,所以在这张拼贴画的背景部分,我运用了中国变脸艺术中的元素。方言说唱是近几年流行起来的中国说唱形式。Bridge是中国方言说唱的代表人物之一。他的创作不会特别注意区别普通话和方言,越来越追求听着舒服就好。这种自然杂糅,让整首曲子埋着很多出其不意。

 The song named “The Last Emperor” can be traced back to the movie named “The Last Emperor”. Jony J deconstructs the classical tragic characteristics of the film from a modern perspective, captures the characters’ desire for freedom, and explores characters’ destiny and choice from a young perspective in the lyrics. He dispelled the solemnity of the original song with a dissolute attitude, and in the tragic atmosphere of the last emperor, he faced the variables with smiles. I adopt dragon design as the background part of this collage. The legend of the dragon and the dragon culture are the historical heritage of some East Asian countries such as China and one of the most representative cultural symbols of the Chinese nation. In ancient  China, dragons were only used by emperors. The shape on Jony J’s head is an emperor’s hat.

Jony J的歌曲“末代皇帝”的背景音乐,来源于电影《末代皇帝》,肖佳以现代视角解构了它的古典悲剧特质,捕捉着其中角色对自由的渴望,以年轻的视角在歌词中探讨自己的命运与选择。用浪荡不羁的姿态消解了原曲的庄重,在《末代皇帝》的悲剧氛围中,笑对无常。在这张拼贴画中,背景部分,我运用了龙纹,龙的传说和龙文化是中国等一些东亚国家的历史传承,是中华民族最具代表性的文化象征之一。在中国,龙纹是给古代皇帝使用的。肖佳头上的造型,是一个皇帝的帽子。

Lexie has a dong names Mulan, which integrates Chinese element to combine traditional Chinese stories with hip hop culture. The Chinese and English lyrics are more innovative. The Rap is superimposed with new and refined operas. The multi-faceted nature of the songs makes the classic heroine Mulan seem to return to modern times. Mulan is a female character in the Chinese literary works who joined in the army instead of her father. The story took place in the the Northern Wei Dynasty against Rouran Khaganate. In this story, Mulan decided to disguise herself into a man to join the army instead of her father. The left part of this collage is Lexie’s face, and the right part is Mulan’s face.

Lexie有一首歌叫花木兰,这首歌将中西文化结合,中英文歌词更具有创新意义,Rap中叠加着戏曲新颖脱俗,歌曲展现的多面性让经典女英雄木兰仿佛回到了现代。花木兰是中国文学作品中一位代父从军的女性人物。该故事之背景为北魏对抗柔然期间。在故事中,花木兰是个年轻女孩,她穿着男装加入军队以代替父亲出征打仗。征打仗。所以在这张拼贴画中,左半部分,是Lexie的脸,而右半部分,是花木兰的脸。

If there are bandit gangs in American rap and “jianghu” in Chinese rap, then the word “jianghu” should be written by GAI. Rap is just a form of music, and the content is the soul of songs. GAI is the first rapper that combines Chinese style with rap, instead of just imitating American and Korean rap. He integrates the Chinese culture of Jianghu  into hip-hop culture. The unrestrained and free rhythm of Chongqing dialect and the bursting rhythm of hip-hop, together with the beating of Chinese style, make songs appear, such as “Dry Weather and Flammable Things”, “Stratagem of The Empty City”, “Hushan Lang” and “Ascetic Monks” , which unexpectedly showed a real texture of rivers and lakes as never before. The combination of Chongqing dialect and rap make GAI find a unique hip-hop style. Although GAI’s rap style is a variant of the combination of American Gansta Rap and native rap, it is still a genuine pioneer of Chinese native rap.  So I choose the elements of “jianghu” in this collage.

在这张拼贴画中我选用了江湖的元素,如果说美国说唱有匪帮,中国说唱有江湖,那么这江湖二字应该是GAI写上去的,说唱只是一种音乐形式,内容才是歌曲的灵魂,GAI是第一个不一味模仿美国韩国说唱,而是将中国风与说唱完美融合的rapper。GAI将中国的江湖文化融入嘻哈文化。重庆方言的奔放洒脱与嘻哈的爆发节奏,加上中国风的beat,《天干物燥》《空城计》《虎山行》《苦行僧》等歌曲出现,竟然出现了前所未有的如此真实的江湖质感。重庆话嘻哈结合的江湖质感让GAI找到了独树一帜的嘻哈风格GAI的江湖说唱是在把美国匪帮说唱跟本土结合做的一个变体,但也算是做出了一个真正中国本土特色说唱的一种流派的开创。
